Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta believes that the duo Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa will be even more influential in the upcoming campaign since they have already shown signs of improvement over last season.
The two players played a key role in Chelsea winning their first league title after more than five years. Costa ended the campaign with 20 league goals, while Fábregas had another stellar campaign in terms of assists. Even though Costa failed to score in any of the competition apart from the Premier league, it was seen as a successful campaign for the 26-year-old.
Azpilicueta, meanwhile, was extremely solid last season and he will be hoping to continue the same. The former Marseille defender is on the verge of becoming a permanent fixture at left back. His presence has already seen Chelsea move on the verge of selling Filipe Luis back to Atletico Madrid. Ahead of the new campaign, Azpilicueta says that the blues are aware of thesignings made by rivals like Manchester United and Manchester City. Even Liverpool have gone on a spending spree. This is likely to make the upcoming challenge of retaining the title extremely difficult. Chelsea, meanwhile, have not been similarly active in the transfer window.
“We know their quality and, despite what they did last season, they want to do better. They are competitive and have a winning mentality. They will not just settle for what they did before and will want to do more. The season they did before was amazing but they are looking to go even further than they did before for Chelsea. That should worry the other teams. What they do is key for us. The amount of goals and assists these two players give us make the difference,” said the Chelsea defender. The 25-year-old made 33 appearances last season.
